STEP Scholars Reflect on the 2023 Alaska Leadership Expedition

This past summer, 36 STEPPERs and soon-to-be seniors embarked on an unforgettable Leadership Expedition, leaving behind the comforts of home to kayak the untamed wilderness of Alaska.

From the bustling urban landscapes of Arizona to the rugged beauty of the Alaskan wilderness, these young adventurers followed their NOLS instructors as they embraced challenges, uncovered hidden strengths, and forged unbreakable bonds.

In this article, we dive into their first-person accounts, hearing directly from 10 STEPPERs about their transformative experience on the STEP/NOLS Alaska Leadership Expedition. From the initial excitement of stepping foot on Alaskan soil to the profound lessons learned amidst rain-soaked nights and awe-inspiring landscapes, each individual story captures the essence of growth, resilience, and the enduring power of self-discovery.

"I didn't know what to expect, given the opportunity to travel through Alaska for three weeks. The most challenging thing I faced was the long hours spent kayaking. It turned into both a mental and physical workout, ensuring my team and I covered the long distances over the sea to reach the next destination.

Out of all the amazing memories, my favorites are the scenes of rainforests, beaches, and the sea animals. The Alaska Expedition taught me to live in the moment and truly appreciate the world around me. I learned to be content where I am, instead of always seeking happiness in the future. These skills have genuinely shifted my mindset and how I approach different situations. Coming back from the trip, I now firmly believe I can conquer whatever comes my way or whatever I set my mind to. If I can survive and thrive during three weeks in the wilderness, there's little I can't achieve!

I want to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who made this adventure possible. My instructors, Murilo, Karin, and Jimena, pushed me beyond my comfort zone and saw potential in me. And to my fellow STEPPERs, your laughter and shared experiences are memories I'll always treasure.”

Paulett

“I found it to be the most eye-opening experience ever. The most challenging aspect of Alaska was the meticulous task of packing the kayaks. It felt like playing an elaborate game of Tetris, and staying dry was an ongoing challenge due to the constant rain.

Among all the incredible moments, my favorite memory from the STEP Alaska Leadership Expedition was the exhilarating encounter with humpback whales. The excitement was palpable as everyone rushed over, chanting, 'WHALE WHALE WHALE,' followed by a hushed moment of awe as we admired the magnificent creatures.

I wholeheartedly encourage other STEPPERs to embark on the Alaska journey. It's an opportunity to learn how to find comfort in uncomfortable situations. The experience is akin to a masterclass in self-reliance, teaching you to navigate solitude while taking care of yourself without familiar support.”

“My most cherished memory is perching atop a hillside, taking in the breathtaking panorama of snow-covered mountains, the Alaskan sea adorned with icebergs, all beneath a vibrant sky. It was during this moment that I found closure for my father's passing.

The Alaska Leadership Expedition provided profound insights into my own capabilities. I learned that I possess untapped potential and the ability to overcome any challenge… I've realized that with determination, I can excel.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the NOLs mentors, guides, donors, and my fellow STEPPERs who shared in this transformative journey. Each individual is a true angel, and the experience was an absolute blast.”

"On that first night in Alaska, it felt like a dream. The reality of being in Alaska didn't truly hit me until about the fifth day. The sight of the mountains and the surroundings felt surreal.

The STEP Alaska Expedition served as a profound teacher, offering insights into my own character. I discovered how to stand independently, vocalize my needs, advocate for myself, and summon the confidence to take initiative.

The lessons I learned and the memories I created are deeply cherished. This trip has left me with a newfound sense of self-love that I might not have found otherwise. Thank you to everyone who made it possible.”

"The most challenging aspect of the STEP Alaska Expedition was not being able to share the incredible experiences I was having with my family, and enduring days without dry clothes.

The Leadership Expedition revealed my inner strength. I learned that I possess both mental and physical resilience, which I needed to propel me to the finish line. It also instilled a newfound confidence in pursuing future ambitions, such as moving out [of my family home] in a year.

The experience is truly amazing and allows you to fully immerse yourself in the moment with a fantastic group of individuals. I learned so much about myself and now feel prepared to face any obstacles that cross my path.

Thanks to my fellow STEPPERs for being such wonderful individuals and sharing this backcountry adventure. And thank you to our NOLs instructors for their guidance, ensuring our safety, and imparting valuable knowledge during those three weeks."

Brayan

“The night before the STEP Alaska Leadership Expedition, I was a mix of excited, nervous, and uncertain about what lay ahead.

My favorite memory was soaking in the breathtaking views. The contrast between the lush greenery and bodies of water with what I knew from Arizona was awe-inspiring and made all the hard work worthwhile.

Encouraging fellow STEPPERs to join the Alaska Expedition is a no-brainer. It's a unique opportunity that aids in developing leadership skills and understanding oneself, free from the distractions of technology… I learned the importance of teamwork and that facing life's challenges alone isn't always feasible.

Thank you to the mentors, guides, donors, and my fellow STEPPERs for making this experience possible. Being able to learn, improve, and become a better version of myself is truly invaluable."

Charlie

"On that first night in Alaska, I held onto hope that the rain would let up in the coming days. I persevered through the damp night, knowing I'd have to accept the conditions. It didn't cross my mind that the weather would remain consistent for the full three weeks.

My favorite memory was when we were kayaking in rough sea conditions and spotted a pod of whales beside us. The rush of adrenaline combined with the awe-inspiring sight of the whales made for an unforgettable experience.

The top three skills I gained from the experience are leadership, confidence, and social skills. As I step (or STEP) into my senior year and prepare for college, these skills will prove immensely valuable. My increased confidence and leadership capabilities will aid me in my role as the president of the National Honors Society and will open doors to other leadership positions within clubs. Improved social skills will empower me to initiate new relationships.”

"Arriving in Alaska, I was filled with a mix of excitement and surrealness. The beauty was beyond words or images. It left me in awe.

Among all the remarkable memories, my favorite was witnessing the mountains, icebergs, and glaciers. They overwhelmed my senses, making it impossible to take in all at once. It felt like stepping into a surreal dream.

The Leadership Expedition was an eye-opener to my own perseverance and adaptability in new environments… And the comprehensive understanding of leadership I gained will help me function better as both a follower and a leader, emphasizing listening, empathy, and humor.

Thank you to STEP donors and NOLS for making this invaluable opportunity possible. And special thanks to my STEP advisor Juan for unwavering support. To my fellow STEPPERs, you are a fantastic group. Lastly, I'm deeply grateful to my instructors Ole, Gretchen, and Jane for enhancing the experience and making it truly unforgettable."

Dianna

“My fondest memory from the Expedition was when our group visited a glacier shortly after encountering a bear. Our instructor Murilo orchestrated a spontaneous photoshoot against the stunning backdrop. We even pulled out umbrellas, joking that they made us faster on our way back to camp. It was a memorable and fun moment.

The Alaskan Leadership Expedition taught me resilience, independence, self-confidence, and gratitude. I learned that true happiness doesn't require much, and this experience boosted my self-confidence significantly. I now believe that if I could thrive for three weeks in Prince William Sound, I can conquer any challenge.

I'd like to express my appreciation to the NOLs instructors Murilo, Karen, and Jimena for their support and guidance. STEP 3 was a fantastic team, and I'm thankful for our collective energy and determination. Tracy, your vision for the STEP program has had an incredible impact. Lastly, I'm immensely grateful to my parents for their trust and support throughout this journey."

Sofia

"Upon arriving in Alaska, I was filled with excitement as I settled into NOLS. It was my first experience sleeping in a tent, and I found myself surrounded by newfound friends from my STEP group.

The most challenging moment of the expedition was that first night. Ignoring advice, I embraced the rain, not realizing the consequences. I ended up wet and freezing, unprepared for the conditions. But I learned from my mistake and managed to have a much better night's sleep afterward.

The expedition taught me invaluable lessons about myself. I found my passion for travel, outdoor activities, and cooking. I also learned the art of being present and discovered a new level of resilience and independence within me. I realized that my limits are farther than I thought, and I'm capable of much more than I believed.

Thank you to the donors for making this opportunity possible, to my STEP mentors for their support, and to my NOLs instructors for their guidance. To my STEP peers, thank you for creating an environment of camaraderie. I'm thankful for everyone who played a part in making it so memorable."
